ARBA YOUTH IN BLUES
Please find full information about the program in the column below on the left. You can register for the program using the form in the column on the right.
PROGRAM MISSION STATEMENT
The mission of the ARBA Youth in Blues program is to educate, nurture and foster the next generation of South Australian blues musicians.
We will provide participants with the opportunity to be educated and mentored by experienced professional musicians.
They will learn about the history of the blues, blues musical forms, songwriting, stagecraft and marketing. They will get the opportunity to connect, rehearse and perform with other young musicians. There will also be public performance opportunities.
The program will also aim to introduce the participants and their families to the wider blues community and foster connections that will continue well past the formal program duration.
The ARBA Youth in Blues Program will become an important contributor to the ongoing sustainability and longevity of the blues scene in South Australia.
WHO ARE WE LOOKING FOR TO JOIN THE PROGRAM?
We are looking for young people between the ages of 12 and 20 who play a musical instrument and/or sing and want to play and/or learn blues music.
We’re looking for people who sing, play guitar, bass, harmonica, piano, drums, trumpet, saxophone and trombone.
Participants will need to supply their own musical instrument and be able to bring them to all four rehearsals and the performance. This means drummers will need to bring their own kit. Guitar, bass and piano players will need to bring their own instrument and amp.
The cost of the program is $50.00 (payable upon registration).
In return for this, participants attend 4 workshops, receive ARBA membership (if not already a member) and a copy of the specially produced Youth in Blues instructional "play along" CD. All participants who complete the program will be presented with a certificate of achievement.
Participants will be grouped into 1 of 4 bands. They will be grouped with other participants who match their skill level, experience, and age. This is to ensure participants will get the maximum benefit from the program.
Each band will be allocated 1 mentor for the duration of the program. The mentor will be a blues specialist and will guide and coach their band to learn 1 to 3 songs. Blues concepts (ie blues form, rhythm, improvisation etc) will be taught throughout the process of learning the song(s) the mentor has chosen for their band.
Each band will have a 2 hour rehearsal, 6:30pm to 8:30pm, once per week over 4 consecutive weeks (see schedule below).
The Program will conclude with a 45 minute concert on Friday November 2nd at 7:30pm. The “Youth In Blues” bands will perform as support act for Muddy Road and Nikko & Snooks as part of “Prospects Roots and Blues Sessions”.
Rehearsal and the concluding concert are as follow:
Thurs Oct 11th 6:30pm to 8:30pm
Thurs Oct 18th 6:30pm to 8:30pm
