Gwyn returns to Australia regularly, always playing to crowds of devoted fans, as he tears venues up in his inimitable fiery fashion. If you haven’t heard Gwyn play live before, prepare yourself for an intense evening of Blues Rock in the finest Rory Gallagher style. Guitar playing is what Gwyn does best and is skill levels are stellar, no-one else puts on a show quite like this quiet, unassuming man.
Gwyn Ashton was supposed to be launching his newest album during his South Australian 2016 tour, but unfortunately the album won’t be quite ready in time. I asked Gwyn what the hold-up was and he mentioned differences with a record company and unfinished album artwork as the reasons for it not being ready.
If the new album (when we get it) is as great as his 2012 issue “Radiogram”, we are indeed in for something special. “Radiogram” is full of beautiful guitar work, heartfelt vocals, blazing solos and exemplary musicianship throughout a set of great Blues/Rock. There is nobody around (that I can think of), presenting this music quite like Gwyn Ashton these days. His music is very reminiscent of 1970’s, 1980’s and 1990’s stadium rock and Blues ala Rory Gallagher, Cream, Whitesnake, etc, but in no way is Ashton’s music dated. It is very much NOW, full of energy, rare skill and in ya face. Exuberance rules divine.
